Have you ever travelled solo? Travelling alone can be an incredibly amazing and rewarding experience. Read all about the best solo travel destinations with Jet2holidays here.
Seven years ago I’d never have believed that in 2023 I would be a confident solo traveller, with years of experience beneath my belt. It seems dramatic to say but taking my first solo trips all those years ago changed my life. My first ever experience of proper travelling was when I boarded a plane alone and flew to Mexico to travel around the country with a bunch of strangers. Talk about diving in the deep end! The trip ended with four days spent solo and a memento of a sugar skull tattoo on my ankle, haha!
Not only did that trip help me fall in love with travel, but it did wonders for my confidence. Since that trip, I have travelled solo to Berlin, Copenhagen and Vienna. I often take myself on solo trips in the UK, from day dates to the Hellfire Caves to overnight trips in Nottingham.
I absolutely love travelling solo – I find it so rewarding – but it’s not without its challenges. From struggling to navigate foreign transport (I always struggle with trains and buses in a different country), to finding it hard to push myself out of my comfort zone, it’s not easy. Though everyone gets better at overcoming these challenges over time, budget is another big fallback for people wanting to travel solo.
Travelling can be quite expensive anyway – but the costs can really add up when travelling alone. Not only can you not split bills with others, but many holiday operators and hotels charge extra when travelling solo. For example, most hotels charge by room – not by person – which seems incredibly unfair!
