Here’s what I got up to on a recent trip to Cornwall due to my best friend’s wedding…
Last month I headed to Cornwall for my best friend’s wedding. It was an event I’d been looking forward to for ages. And predictably it rolled around a lot sooner than expected! We didn’t really have the time or funds to make the most of Cornwall whilst we were there, but we still had a wonderful time!
Cornwall is a place very special for me. My mum was born in Cornwall and my nan is from Cornwall, making me part Cornish! This meant we spent many holidays down there when I was younger – so any excuse to go back!
I was lucky enough to bring my boyfriend as a plus one. I’d made him promise to be my backup plus one back when we were first dating, so thankfully we ended up making things official not long before the wedding! This made the journey down a lot easier. We’d booked the Friday off work, stocked up on snacks and curated some decent pop-punk playlists for the drive down.
Five hours or so later – driving through a lot of rain, we arrived. We stayed at the beautiful Sandhill House Country Retreat – a lovely classic B&B which was ever so romantic. Mary was a wonderful host – as was Fudge the dog! The rooms were cosy and really luxurious and the breakfasts were to die for! I’ve never stayed somewhere so plush and romantic before. The entire weekend/stay felt very grown-up.
I’d hoped to make it to the bride’s suite on the Friday night to catch up but unbeknown to us, taxis are few and far between in Gunnislake – especially on a weekend. So we booked our taxis for the next day and drove down the road for dinner – delicious chip shop chips.
We brought food back to the B&B and ate there. There was something real nice about having a drink and dinner in such a lovely room! It would have been nice to head out to one of the traditional Cornish pubs but after such a long drive and lack of money, we thought it would be wiser to save our cash for the wedding the next day.
The following day we stuffed ourselves silly with the delicious full English fry-up breakfast before getting ready for the busy day. We stopped to take a few photos outside of the country house – I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to pose in front of the pale blue front door surrounded by beautiful flowers. Even in the height of autumn, everything still looked in bloom.
The ceremony was over sooner as we expected (as these things are), but it was emotional – plus Becky looked absolutely stunning. I think she wore the prettiest wedding dress I’ve ever seen! This was also the first wedding I’ve ever gone to as a friend – and attended with a boy – so it was a weekend of firsts for me!
The reception was a lot of fun. We were sat with Jo – a good friend from Uni – and her boyfriend and we had tons of fun catching up. From romantic slow dances, hilarious photobooths and the arrival of pizza – all in all it was a great evening. We were the last one’s on the dancefloor and, unashamedly, I have video proof of this. The hangover the next morning though was tough on the both of us.

We’d hoped to have found some time to actually explore Cornwall the following day but it just wasn’t doable. After check out – and a much needed hours nap – we drove to the seafront to settle our stomachs. We found a cute pub overlooking the River Tamar. Here we had some proper Cornish fish and chips, surrounded by lots of cute dogs. So although we technically didn’t have time to enjoy Cornwall properly, at least we had a nice pub lunch!
The drive home was even longer than the drive down – thanks to the sore heads and how tired we were. But luckily we were both good company so it wasn’t boring or anything like that. We also found time to take a tiny detour to drive through Cheddar Gorge. This is another place I have fond memories of visiting when I was younger. We couldn’t stop – but it was nice to drive through.
Overall, it was a really lovely ‘grown-up’ weekend. There’s something really weird (in a good way) about attending a friend’s wedding. It’s so different from a family wedding that you’re forced to attend when you’re younger. Or a wedding where you have to be on your best behaviour. Being able to bring my boyfriend and actually having someone to slow dance with was really lovely. As was just seeing my best friend so happy!
This visit to Gunnislake/Cornwall may have been limited, but it was a really lovely visit. We got to see quite a bit of the quaint little town. And luckily we managed to see some great views during the drive there and back.
