5 Experiences I’m Looking Forward to in America

25/03/2019
A flat lay of travel related objects on my bed. As well as my passport, there is some american dollars, a small yellow bottle of hair spray/protector and a small travel book opened on a huge photo of some snowy mountains. The quote on the page reads 'travel is more than the seeing of sights. It is a change that goes on deep and permanent, in the ideas of living'. Louise is using this book to plan her upcoming trip to America.

I am going to America tomorrow. TOMORROW. Can you believe it? I honestly can’t. It’s like a dream come true! I feel like I’ve been waiting for this trip for so long and have been doing so much research. There’s so much I’m looking forward to, from trying the classic American junk food like In-N-Out burgers and meeting so many cute American guys (with their amazing accents of course).

So I decided to do a post about some actual experiences I’m looking forward to for my first time in America (although there are so many so it’s been very hard trying to narrow it down to just these!). I’m focusing just on experiences in this post, but I am honestly looking forward to everything.

It’s actually taken me ages to properly understand what this is. At first, I thought it was a park that included Disneyland (because some do, right?!) then I had to try and understand which was at Universal Studios Hollywood as there are more than one. From what I’ve gathered, we’ve got The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and The Mummy ride (yay!), but not the famous Jurassic Park ride that everyone talks about. But there is Jurrasic Park ride…nonetheless, I’ve again tried to not do too much research here because I want to be blown away upon arrival, but I am really, really excited to go to an American theme park!

I saw someone talking about this in a travel group on Facebook and it immediately piqued my interest; the fact that you get to visit an actual famous gold mine is amazing! Our tour with Awesome Adventures includes a visit to Techatticup Mine (which ran from 1861 to 1942) to hear all about its history, set against the beautiful backdrop of Nevada – how’s that for traditional Wild West history?! The tour also offers a standard ATV sports quad experience around the surroundings, featuring views of the Colorado River with the Mountains of Northern Arizona. This takes place, well, on Wednesday – our first day in Vegas – and what a welcome to Vegas!

I can’t wait for those ultimate photo ops at the Hollywood sign and ‘Welcome to Las Vegas’ sign. My Insta feed is gonna be awesome!

In true classic American style, I am super excited for our road trip. We’ve booked our hotels and have an idea of the route from A to B – but what happens in between is anyone’s guess. I’ve bookmarked tons of attractions on Roadtrippers – and we are planning to visit a National Park – but I’m really excited to just jump in the car and drive. Apart from Roadtrippers, I’m going to try not to use technology too much for this part of the trip. I’ve got no doubt that just by driving along we’ll find plenty to see and do. And if that includes a giant ball of yarn or another oddball classic roadside attraction, then I’m happy.

Can you believe I’m going to go on an actual hike? In America? Lazy old me? The closest thing I’ve done to a hike this year is either a walk along the canals in Tring or a New Year’s walk in Dunstable in search of a geocache. Briony told me if I didn’t do 20k steps every day this month in preparation then I’m not allowed to go on holiday with her. I managed it for a week. Haha. Still, this will be a fun challenge. I’ve heard Joshua Tree is beautiful (I mean, even my fave’s The Maine recorded there), so I’m sure the hiking will be worth it. Plus as long as I see a real-life cactus, I’ll be happy.

I’ve tried to include experiences from all over our planned trip, but being that we haven’t yet done much research into Tijuana or San Digo, most of these experiences take place around Vegas/LA. But I’m not complaining; it means we’ve got a mix of planned places and places that we will just explore and hopefully come across cool things to do by chance – which is always lovely.
