My USA Travel Diary: Joshua Tree & Our Route One Road Trip

03/07/2019
A photo of the sun rising (or setting!) in Joshua Tree. Skinny tree trunks are almost silhouetted against the soft blue sky, with hills in the background and a sandy foreground.

After our time spent in San Diego and Tijuana, we made it back to LA to pick up a rental car from the airport (swollen ankle injury in tow). I don’t know what type of car we got in the end – it was big and white – turns out it’s kinda expensive if you want to go down the classic American road trip car/convertible route – but it suited us just fine.

It was finally time for the last leg of our journey – our final three days which I’m all grouping into one blog post.

You can read up on some of the previous sum ups here.

The first part of our road trip took us straight to Joshua Tree, where we stayed in a sweet little AirBnB, in the desert just outside of Joshua Tree. This area was really cute and really signified part of America for me – the accommodation was just one story with cute bright and bold furnishings throughout the guest bedroom. Nearby, there was a farm/ranch?? with alpacas!

I still had a bad ankle, so we took it easy today. After all our driving, we stopped at a supermarket for some food and I had a nap whilst Briony went for a sunset hike…where she promptly got lost. Eventually she made it back to our accommodation where I was none the wiser, fast asleep and resting my ankle! We then went out for food – and ended up at Taco Bell. Our first ever Taco Bell! It was worth the wait and so delicious and affordable that we went back not once but twice before our trip was over.

What can I say about Joshua Tree? It’s definitely one of the best places in America – far too amazing and beautiful to put into words. We got up super early to enjoy the sunrise and as much as I hate early mornings, the early wake-up call was more than worth it. I didn’t quite realize how big Joshua Tree was – I knew it was a National Park but maybe that there was just one big area for hiking. I was so wrong! Even when we arrived at Joshua Tree, we still had to drive nearly an hour to get to where we wanted to. But even driving through the deserted and winding roads, it was beautiful. I cannot even begin to describe how amazing the whole area was or how astounding the views were!

Odd shaped rocks and stone piles in Joshua tree, with greenery surrounding either side of a sandy walkway.
A plaque in Joshua tree which points out and shares information about Juniper with Mistletoe, some of the plants and fauna on display.
Rock formations standing out against a clear blue sky, with different fauna on the ground and desert trees.
Another shot of a unique desert tree found in Joshua Tree. It's surrounded by sand and fauna.
A photo taken between two large rocks at Joshua Tree. You can see out into the desert between them.

We did a couple of hikes here – one small one and another longer one at Skull Rock which was fun. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves..

On our final two days, we didn’t really go to any one place in particular. We drove up as far as Big Sur and then drove along the coast back, stopping where we fancied. I got just one corny roadside attraction in (a giant dinosaur – well worth the detour!) and we also stopped at a few cute little beaches, ate a beyond sweet Inn (Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn), ended up lost in a town that looked like New Orleans, discovered a Danish town and had many, many singalongs to pop punk. Again, our trip was so varied and so I’m just going to share just a few photos!

Louise walking through the sea barefoot. She is wearing a short white dress with thin black stripes and has her blonde hair back in a messy bun. She is wearing sunglasses and holding her slip on trainers in her hand.
A photo of a street in America that looks like it's from Sweden. The buildings are colourful but due to the number of cars parked on the road, you can't see them too well.
A miniature windmill attached to a characteristic building with orange roof tiles.

..and thus we came to the end of our trip. Although we actually ended up staying on an extra night because we, er, missed our flight (that’s another story for another time), our final day spent driving along the coast was the perfect end to an out-of-this-world trip.

Almost three months on and I still cannot believe that I even went and I still miss the holiday – I simply cannot wait to go back one day!
