My USA Travel Diary: Universal Studios Hollywood

As explained in my last travel/America post, Briony and I used our go LA cards to visit Universal Studios Hollywood!

I love a good theme park. Although Briony had been before when she was younger, we were both looking forward to it. It definitely helped that she’d been before because she knew how bad wait times could get; whereas it was all entirely new for me!

We downloaded the app to keep an eye on wait times. Then we began the day with the studio tour – which was really eye-opening! We got to view tons of great sets from things like Bates Motel and War of the Worlds. We also learned about how they change the weather for movies and create different effects. Some of the experience was very hands on, and I spent much of the time screaming! In some instances, there was so much going on, especially in the Fast & Furious ride which was action-packed from start to finish!

If you ever go to Universal Studios, I would definitely say this is one thing you shouldn’t miss. It’s so eye-opening. Not only was it really interesting driving around and learning about behind the scenes of the sets, but it was also really fascinating. What we learned was so hands-on and we found ourselves right in the centre of all the action.

Once my heart had calmed down, we made a beeline straight for The Mummy ride. I’d heard so many things about this ride. Being such a fan of the film, there was no way I was missing this! Upon arrival (and a must have photo in front of the entrance), I was pleased to find that we could store our bags in the lockers for free for a certain amount of time to avoid taking them on the rides. I thought this was a great idea!

I love that the short wait for the ride was spent in an area made to look like a giant tomb. Much of the rides we went on were like this which was good. This avoided too much boredom when waiting in line. This ride was pretty thrilling and without a doubt one of my favourites from the park.

A recreation of an old deli market and bakery at Universal Studios Hollywood. The set is dressed with colourful shopfronts and baskets of food.
A pretend building front set at Universal Studios Hollywood. It's made to look like an antique bookstore, with marble head statues sitting on old vintage bookcases outside.
The Bates Motel set at Universal Studios Hollywood. There is a faded blue sign that reads Bates Motel in the foreground, and behind it you can see a classic car and an old motel set. The motel is painted in faded yellow, red and blue colours.
Louise posing at Harry Potter World in America. She is wearing a dark blue top and a light blue patterned skirt. There is a replica of Hogwarts behind her.

Afterwards we took our time to explore the different areas of the park. The area made to look like New York was really cool but the Harry Potter area was the most amazing!

The Walking Dead walkthrough attraction was super fun. Waiting in line was really scary and gave us plenty of photo opportunities. However as predicted, the walkthrough itself was very short – especially as we spent most of it running through screaming! I have to mention the amazing Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey ride too. Although it wasn’t a rollercoaster as such, it was so innovative and fun. It was a complete highlight of my day.

I think the only downside of my visit was that I was expecting a little more. There were only five or so rides altogether. Out of these, the majority of them were not even rides and were instead 3D animated ‘rides’. I’m not complaining though. They were all really fun and it was absolutely amazing what can be done with a simple 3D animation. It just wasn’t quite what I expected when heading to Universal Studios! Next time, I’ll make sure to find time to visit Berry Knott’s farm or Six Flags too.

although things like The Simpsons ride or the Waterworld show were things that we really enjoyed despite not being kids! Despite there being only a few main rides there, we spent nearly an entire day at the park. We sipped butterbeer whilst exploring Hogsmeade and loved taking lots of photos of the varied sets. I’m super glad we went. I would have been really disappointed if we’d gone all the way to LA and not visited Universal Studios.

It was a great day overall, I was just sad it didn’t have the famous Jurassic Park ride!

What ride would you most be excited to go on at Universal Studios Hollywood? Let me know!

Next Day: San Diego & Tijuana
