The Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities

I love visiting London and experiencing all the unique, offbeat and unusual things you can do in the city. There are so many great things you can do as a really fun London date idea too. One of which is the bar-meets-museum, The Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities. Never heard of it? This hidden gem is underrated but well worth heading into Hackney for.

Narrow museum corridor lined with glass display cases and red walls filled with various artifacts, documents, and memorabilia from The Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities, creating a dense, historical ambiance.

The Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities, Fine Art & Unnatural History is a unique museum (and bar) that first opened in 2006 by author, lecturer and impresario Viktor Wynd. Both the bar and museum are in a building called The Last Tuesday Society. This is an organisation also run by Viktor. The society holds lectures and seances, as well as a taxidermy academy and various events like Halloween balls.

A close-up of a cocktail glass with a clear, pale yellow drink, garnished with a small purple flower petal. The glass sits on a table in the dimly lit Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities, with softly glowing candles in the background.
A brass plaque with the inscription "i must return to the otherworld" mounted on a dark wall above a wooden picture frame at The Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities.

I’d highly recommend making a reservation for the cocktail bar – named the Absinthe Parlour – to extend your experience. Besides, you have to pass through the bar to get to the museum anyway!

The Absinthe Parlour offers unusual spirits and extraordinary elixirs in a dark but eccentric setting. This all sets the scene for the museum below. The cocktails are just as creative as the bar’s decor.

A decorative sign reading "The Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities" hangs on a wall above a stairwell, surrounded by various mounted animal heads, including a zebra and deer.

In the basement of the bar – accessible by a gold winding staircase – you’ll find a plethora of weird and wonderful things. You’ll spot fairies, mermaids, unicorns, dead animals and more. Basically, it’s not for the faint-hearted. But if you love dark and unusual things, it’s the perfect location for a unique date.

Museum apartments include fine art, a cabinet of monsters, magick and the occult, erotica and surrealism. Though the museum is small, it packs a lot into its space with something to see on every shelf or at every corner. You can see a small collection of things that caught my eye below…

A vintage cabinet filled with various whimsical curiosities from The Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities, including glass jars, small books, a "balloon" sign, and a taxidermy cat dressed in a striped hat and bow tie.
A whimsical display at The Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities features two skeletons inside a glittery cabinet, with one holding a rose. A green figurine stands outside by the open door while another skeleton gestures towards the cabinet.

This is the perfect spot for a unique date night, especially if you combine your visit with a few drinks in the bar too. They do also host various events and lectures at the bar and via Zoom. The range from topics such as to voodoo, witch trials and even séances.

Entry to the bar is free but costs £10 to enter the museum. You can also reserve a table at the bar beforehand (recommended) and receive a discounted £6 entry to the museum after a tipple for dutch courage!
