5 Totally Underrated TV Shows to Watch

A cosy scene featuring a letter board displaying "NETFLIX AND CHILL," a beige blanket, a bowl of popcorn, and part of a laptop visible. The setting suggests a relaxed, comfortable environment for discovering underrated TV shows and enjoying some quality screen time.

There’s nothing I love more than a real gem of a TV show. Unlike new music or favourite hidden bars, TV shows tend to be one thing that people aren’t too protective over. After all, TV series can really benefit from word of mouth.

Here are some of my favourite underrated TV shows.

Cuckoo is one show I got into thanks to my Dad. I sat down to watch one episode and immediately found myself drawn in by Andy Samberg’s performance as the slightly bonkers/cuckoo new husband of Rachel. After a year of travelling abroad, she brings him home to meet her family and of course, they are taken back and less than pleased at all the changes. Though his character was replaced/left the show, this charming series still thrived. Especially with Greg Davies as the hilarious father who can’t help but get himself into odd situations. From developing a total man-crush on his cool neighbour to having the problem of trying to break up parties but instead always ending up off his head having a whale of the time, he is just purely hilarious. As long as you go into this show not expecting a lot, you’ll soon be charmed.

Okay so Scrubs isn’t exactly underrated but I do believe it’s a totally forgotten gem. I recently hauled out my DVD box set (yes, I feel old. Especially as a whole disc is missing) to re-watch it. Although it has always been an all-time favourite of mine, I always forget just how amazing it is. It has everything a TV show can offer: romance, drama, comedy… and despite the fact that it’s set in a hospital and deals with death a lot, pretty much every episode has a strong message behind it or leaves you feeling inspired.

The characters are loveable and at eight seasons long (we do not speak of the ninth season), I absolutely love seeing the journey of all the characters as they grow and change. My favourite has to be Elliot, who starts off as an insecure girl and grows to be a beyond-strong confident woman throughout.

Okay so this show was technically about chav. But you can’t help but love the characters, even if the humour was a bit silly at times. The Biscuit Rap? One of the silliest things ever yet still absolutely hilarious.

Don’t let the name put you off! Another stupidly funny show, Threesome basically follows a drunken night between a couple and their gay best friend. When the woman ends up pregnant, the question is: who is the father? From a chicken shop proposal to a fake baby getting run over by a truck in the street, this show never fails to make me laugh. That being said, it also has a few emotional moments too. It stars the absolutely stunning (and naturally pretty) and hilarious Amy Huberman (plus Stephen Wright and Emun Elliott). I’m still angry that they only ever made two series.

This one is a funny one. Although I absolutely loved the first season and all the mystery behind it, the second season was nowhere near as good. It stars Matt Dillion as Ethan Burke, a U.S Secret Service agent who wakes up after a car accident in an idyllic town called Wayward Pines. But things don’t add up when he stumbles across a former lover who does not remember him. He soon realises he cannot leave or contact the outside world. The entire series had me on the edge my seat, binging as many episodes as I could in one go. The show is based on the Wayward Pines novels by Blake Crouch, which I definitely have to read now!
