My Favourite Netflix Picks Right Now

23/05/2019
Netflix is open on a small laptop screen with a variety of shows on display. Beside the laptop is a paper mache skull with hot pink sequins stuck to it.

Once returning home from America, one of my main aims was, of course, to catch up on whatever I’d missed on Netflix whilst I was away. I was able to access Netflix at times whilst travelling – endless episodes of Supernatural on the proved very useful for long bus rides – but obviously this was just the American Netflix.

Here’s what I’ve been digging recently.

Oh my gosh. I thought Jane The Virgin would never return! When I found out they were finally dropping a new series (after that amazing cliffhanger!), I was so gutted to learn it was whilst I was away. And no, it wasn’t on the American Netflix. So I’ve been loving catching up on this (and the return of some characters…). My only small issue is that I feel like it is a little rushed. Especially being that it’s the last season and there are obviously some big plots to tie up. I really, really don’t know how it’s going to end though. I like that everything is up in the air at the moment.

I’ve seen this show too many times to count and it just gets better every time. I’ve recently met someone who shares my love for this show and we’re forever quoting it. So naturally, I’ve ended up binge-watching it again. On my last go, I was up to season nine or ten, but since I’ve been home I’ve managed to catch up with the entire show up to the end of season thirteen which is crazy! I guess I’ve had it on at night to fall asleep to most nights too. But this show never gets old. It takes a few episodes to get into. I also think you need a specific sense of humour – but once you’re in, you realize just how smart the comedy is in this show.

This might be a film but as soon as I finished watching it, I wanted to go ahead and watch it again immediately. It stars the amazing Gina Rodriguez (from Jane The Virgin). Although there are a few similarities between their characters (she’s again a kooky writer), she really shines in this film. It follows Gina’s character who gets dumped by her boyfriend and spends the following day with her two best friends in New York, wanting a big adventure before she moves away. It’s along the same lines of Ibiza on Netflix and I love it. I’m so used to watching epic night out/party films with an all-male case (Project X, Superbad etc) but Someone Great and (Ibiza!) proves that women can be just as funny and outrageous.

Oh gosh. This series! I’ve never watched a show with so many twists and turns in my life. Despite that, it wasn’t too heavy or hard to watch? Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini (hair goals) are absolutely amazing in this. Both play complex and strong characters who are also just so likeable. The show is about Christina’s character Jen, struggling to come to terms with her husband’s death, which happened in a hit-and-run. She strikes up a friendship with Judy (Linda Cardellini) as she tries to get to the bottom of what happened. Totally gripping – and totally achievable to binge-watch the entire series in just one evening. And – eight of the ten episodes of the series were directed by a woman – and the writers’ room had six women. Hell yeah.

I’m only on the second episode of this show so far and it took me a while to give in to watch it, but after seeing so many trailers, I finally stuck it on in the background one night and actually ended up paying full attention to it. It’s really mysterious – basically, a bunch of teenagers end up being unable to leave their hometown when all adults disappear – and of course, tons of chaos kicks off. Like I said, I’m only on the second episode so there’s not much more I can say but it’s definitely it’s not just for teenagers.

ALSO can I just mention the confusion around Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile?! I was looking forward to this film for so long, I made plans to see it at the cinema only to discover it was going direct to Netflix. I swear I saw it on there one day, but didn’t watch cause I promised I’d see it with someone else. When I went to watch it later, it was gone! Now it’s apparently only on NOWTV, despite being distributed by Netflix. It makes no sense.

Anyway. What have you been watching on Netflix lately? Am I missing out on anything? Let me know!
