From overworked and disgruntled employee to country pumpkin bumpkin – here’s a diary of my first season in Stardew Valley!
In the last month, I’ve totally become addicted to a fun mobile game (although it’s available on other platforms) called Stardew Valley. This sweet little game consists of looking after a farm, mingling with town folk, attending village fairs and taking part in different missions to extend in the game. There’s actually a lot more to it then that, and the game is kind of neverending. There’s always something to do.
What I love about it is that it’s so relaxing. It’s very enjoyable spending your day planting crops, looking after animals and taking care of other tasks, all to the backdrop of sweet music and ever-changing seasons. Beautiful pink petals sometimes fall to the floor during spring, whereas on rainy days the sound of the storm is almost comforting enough to send you to sleep.
During a time of such uncertainty (I spend some days feeling rather productive and getting lots done, whereas others I feel so lost that I struggle to find the need to get out of bed), getting lost in the little world of Stardew Valley has been a godsend.
My boyfriend suggested I write a sort of diary blog post about my experiences – which I thought was a great idea! I don’t often write about gaming on this blog (at least not as much as I’d like to), and another downside of the situation at hand is that I don’t have much inspiration for writing or new content most days.
So taking his advice, I’m sharing a diary post of how my first season in Stardew Valley has gone. I hope that it’s entertaining or that some of you may feel inclined to pick up and try the game yourself – hopefully, it will help your mental health like it has mine when being stuck at home all day.

1 SPRING
Grandpa has passed and left me his farm. Extremely bored of working for a big cooperation in a stale office job, I head to Stardew Valley for a slower simple life. The farm is a mess upon arrival, and I immediately wonder if I’m cut out for this. I quickly meet Mayor Lewis (who gifts me some starter parsnip seeds) and Robin, the local carpenter. According to other townsfolk, the small cabin isn’t much, but I find it rather cozy. I spend the day settling in, and take a short jaunt into town to start meeting everyone.

2 SPRING
Today I woke up to find a note had been delivered, inviting me to the beach. How intriguing! I explore the cute town a little more before continuing my mission to the beach where I’m gifted a fishing rod! Er, I know NOTHING about fishing.
I give it a go though. It’s a bit tricky and takes some getting used to but I come away with two different fish and a shell from the beach!
I wander to the north part of town to try and find Robin’s shop but it’s late by the time I get there, so it’s closed. I do find a man across the river however, frantically trying to break down some rocks. There’s no way across, so I wonder what that means?!
I make it back to the farm super late and immediately head to bed. I was luckily gifted some seeds from the Mayor yesterday, so I’m waiting for them to grow and earn me some money before buying more seeds. I’m not sure I could afford anymore yet anyway!

3 SPRING
I wake up this morning to pouring rain! It’s not long before I realise I kind of like this setting – it means I don’t have to water my plants or actually do any farming! I do enjoy farming, but I’m itching to explore more. Plus the rain is super nice. The relaxing sounds of the droplets (and what sounds like whales off in the distance) is really therapeutic. It makes me want to just stay in my cabin with the fire on!
4 SPRING
Thanks to a helpful inside source (i.e the TV), I discover some spring onions growing south of the town today! On my travels, I also discover wild horseradish growing, plus some daffodils. I’m a foraging pro! I also come across a creepy looking sewer, an abandoned shack and a wizard’s tower. A wizard’s tower?! This is getting interesting…

5 SPRING
Me parsnips have grown!!!
This morning I also had a letter from JoJaCart (if you’ll scroll up, you’ll see that’s who I used to work for. It took me about three weeks before my boyfriend pointed this out to me..) saying they’d fixed disruption from a landslide. I head over to where that curious man was digging the other day and find a cave. Inside, I find a cool looking dude with a long white beard and an eye-patch talking about an adventurers guild – and it’s like my life calling!
I explore down five floors of the mine/cave to prove myself (apparently this is a requirement to join the guild) and come across weird slimy ghost creatures, who immediately start attacking me! They’re kinda cute though. I have so much fun that I completely forget to buy some more parsnip seeds..

6 – 7 SPRING
I take a slow couple of days just enjoying the rhythm of farming. It takes a lot of time and energy to clear all the rocks and overgrown grass, so much so that I need to take early nights before I pass out on the farm (because apparently that is a thing). Also, not that I’ve planted much, but my crops are looking a little random and I can’t remember what’s planted where…

8 SPRING
I got an invite to the wizard’s tower today! He basically explains about some weird gremlin things in the community centre but rambles on rather a lot so I don’t really know. He then tosses my gift of flowers into the cauldron. Cheers.
(I’ve since discovered that you can make people be your friend by just gifting them things to achieve ‘heart statuses’). But some of the villagers sure are picky about their gifts..
I’ve decided to create signs for each patch of crops. It drives my OCD mad not having anything line up right, so until some things grow and I can move the patches, my farm is going to look a little messy. Also: check out my cute little scarecrow!

9 – 10 SPRING
I spend a couple of days in the mines and end up with some pretty sweet finds. I’ve got a task to reach level 20 of the mines but who knows how deep they go. At least once I reach level 5, a lift is installed meaning when I come back the next day I can take the lift direct down to level 5 again! Hopefully it’s like that for every five levels..

11 SPRING
I’ve realized I’m just holding on to random ‘finds’ (mostly from the mines) for no reason, so I take a mooch over to the museum/Library to donate them and find out what they actually are.
Look at them! I’m like a real-life archaeologist!
Rick O’Connell, eat your heart out!
12 SPRING
I found Robin’s axe! Returning it for a tidy 250G means that should be enough to treat myself at the Egg festival tomorrow. I’ve heard you can buy cute stuff at village festivals and boy am I looking forward to it. I can’t wait to meet everyone else in the village too.
On my way home, I bumped into Haley. I don’t get good vibes from her but I say hello to be friendly anyway. All I got was a pop up saying ‘Haley is ignoring you’.
I hate that bitch.

13 SPRING | EGG FESTIVAL
It’s the Egg Festival today!!! Gimme all those chocolate eggs!
I have an absolutely delightful time at the egg festival. It’s so lovely that the town does events like this! I bought some special strawberry seeds and a decorative plant, plus mingled with the townsfolk. I think I’ve met everyone now?
Although the less said about the egg hunt the better. I found 7 within 30 seconds, but still…Abigail won. Bloody Abigail. I swear I didn’t even see her pick up any eggs!
14 – 15 SPRING
I spend the next couple of days trying to improve at fishing..but I’m still quite bad! One morning, I awaken to a note from Evelyn! I learn tips about planning ahead with planting my crops, but the part of the note I really pay attention to is the fact that she signs it off with ‘Granny Evelyn’.
But your not my Nan! Maybe my adopted nan.. unless her and Grandpa were having an affair?
Maybe she’s just a sweet old lady who likes taking on the role of Granny…

16 SPRING
I finally made it into the Adventurer’s Guild!!

17 SPRING
HARVEY KNOWS.
Also: Harvey is kinda hot in a dorky kind of way. I have heard you can romance the villagers in this game too and I am game for seducing Harvey.
18 SPRING
Today that dick from the Joja store came over to Pierre’s and offered everyone 50% off to shop at JoJa’s. What an asshole. Poor Pierre. How can you help me Pierre? You can kick that man’s ass. That’s how.
I also finally realised there’s a calendar outside of the shop which indicates birthdays, events and seasons. This gets my thinking cap on and plan ahead for summer, aware that perhaps I should stop buying things that take too long harvest now – summer is fast approaching.
I didn’t get home till 1am from mining today. I’ve heard rumours that if you stay out past a certain time, you pass out and lose a certain % of your money and/or items as a punishment. I made it back sharply as soon as I realised the time…!

19 SPRING
Today I’ve taken it easy; after last night’s late-night, not all my energy was restored thus morning. I spend my day foraging south of the farm and find a travelling cart! Check out the cute little pig with its sunglasses and uber cool fedora hat! There’s some rare items for sale, but nothing I can afford, unfortunately.
20 – 23 SPRING
I’ve held off on buying more crops for now so spend a few days taking it slow; exploring the mines and saving my money. I soon realize I have enough funds to buy a chicken coop and I cannot wait to get some animals on my farm!

24 SPRING | FLOWER FESTIVAL
It’s the day of the Flower Festival! If it’s anything like the Egg Festival, I’m in for a treat.
I head south of the farm and find myself in a previously inaccessible area (a simple plank between cliffs takes me to a large field – just one little plank for all the townsfolk to cross? Is that even safe?!) where I find cute decor, a small shop stand and the town getting ready for this infamous flower dance.
It’s a cute little festival but NO ONE wants to dance with me. Not even any of the ladies! I ask EVERYONE. Additionally, some people are darn right rude at letting me down…
(I should have known Haley would respond like that…)

25 – 26 SPRING
I spend the next couple of days continuing to clear my farm. It’s taking FOREVER. But I can’t complain, especially when one of the days sees me working with beautiful pale pink petals slowly fluttering to the ground around me. It’s so beautiful.
My chicken coop is ready at last and I finally get a chicken! His name is I finally completed my chicken coop and got a chicken! His name is Micko! He’s a cutie.
27 – 28 SPRING
And so the end of spring is upon us. I spend my last couple of days tidying up the farm and also realizing that a Silo is necessary when you have a chicken coop – so I guess that’s my next project!
My Thoughts on Spring
With spring complete, I can’t help but look back on my first season at Lunar Wood Farm. It’s been a blast – who knew I’d enjoy farming so much?! At times I’ve pushed myself too far and I’ve also made a few mistakes, but I’m slowly starting to make a small stream of income.
I end the season on 1703G which isn’t too bad, considering most money I’ve earned throughout the season went directly back into more seeds on the farm. I also managed to explore the mines, make it into the Adventurer’s guild and meet all the other villagers! Not bad for my first ever season.
The only downside of my first season is how no one wanted to dance with me at the Flower Dance! Then again, I haven’t made much effort with my new villagers either yet, so to many of them, I’m still a stranger. This is something I’ll have to work on next season. I’m excited to see what summer brings; what the terrain is going to be like, what crops I’m going to be able to sow and what challenges it might bring!
