Have you been to the London Dungeons recently? As one of my favourite attractions in London, I was delighted to attend for the first time in years. Here is my review of the London Dungeons.
Yesterday I was very kindly invited to pop down and review The London Dungeons on behalf of/with Love Pop Ups: London. I absolutely love The London Dungeons – it is by far one of my favourite attractions in the capital – but soon realised I hadn’t been in so long. The last time I visited must have been years and years ago when they were still at their original location, so I felt like I was attending with fresh eyes.
We arrived at the new and bigger location, taking time to pose during a photo opportunity before lining up. Though the waiting area itself was bigger than the last one, we didn’t have to queue for too long at all and there was plenty to keep us occupied whilst waiting, such as characters coming up to talk to us or weird stuff to look at.
I was quite disappointed to learn the boat ride wasn’t working. In all the times I’ve visited the dungeons I’ve only managed to experience this ride once. It’s always under maintenance when I visit!. However once we got on the tour, I barely noticed its absence. Honestly, I didn’t feel like we missed out on anything nor did it seem to affect the overall running of the tour – i.e we didn’t have to bypass anything or walk a different way that I was aware of!
My Honest Review of The London Dungeons
Some parts of the tour were entirely new to me. I particularly enjoyed the Sweeny Todd performance – a unique experience which required us to circle around a room and peer through the slats of a wooden wall to watch what was going on. Flickering lights and atmospheric music helped build the tension, along with a somewhat limited view – seeing things out the corner of my eye or the slow stalk of the character around the room really had me on edge.
The shows I had seen before were still as funny as always – with a few improvements since my last visit. A couple of experiences were entirely the same – like the judge – but I still enjoyed it.
I would say things were a little less jumpy, perhaps because we had children in our group – but don’t get me wrong, I still screamed quite a few times! I also felt that compared to my last visit, the group seemed a lot larger than normal. This meant we spent a lot of time squeezing in and trying to find a good spot to see – but it was also a busy time when we visited so perhaps that’s why.
The bar at the end was a nice touch too. I certainly wanted to order something strong to settle my nerves! Also, I really liked how the bar was also themed to an extent – it’s something so simple yet works so well.
Final Thoughts
I was, as always, amazed at the attention to detail. Despite being in a bigger space, everything was as great as it always has been. Not once did we feel out of place and everything clicked together really well to re-create the grim history of London – even down to certain smells.
Overall I really enjoyed my visit to the London Dungeons. For me, it’s a place that never gets old. It may not be as scary as other attractions but it still draws you in and gets you in places you don’t expect and you cannot fault how well they bring London’s history to life.
