I am probably one of the laziest people I know.
I am so lazy that when I first got a Fitbit and started a job in retail – walking around all day – I finished a shift to find a string of worried messages from my friends who thought my 35,000 steps a day couldn’t possibly be achieved by me and that the only realistic option was that I’d been kidnapped.
Luckily, things have changed a few years on. I actually don’t get anywhere near to that step count a day anymore (because I work in an office) but I’d like to say I’m a little more fit. I attend a dance class every single Monday without fail, try to get into the habit of attending Pound Fitness once a week and drink lots of water.
My First Experience with Personal Training Sessions
But recently I started Personal Training sessions – something I never ever saw myself doing – and I’m going to be honest with you: things have changed.
At the time of writing this, I’ve attended a month of sessions (but at the time of publishing, probably about a month and a half) and I cannot even begin to tell you how much better I feel for it. I started PT sessions with Caroline (CAsh Fitness), who also runs Poundfit.
Full disclaimer: I run her marketing for her and in return, she has offered me free sessions – I probably would have never found the motivation to actually pay for sessions myself so this is actually a good thing as it motivates me to get up and go. That being said, I will, as always, be entirely honest in this post.
I was super nervous before my first session – I was convinced I’d faint, get screamed at or just really embarrass myself with how little I could do. But straight away Caroline put me at ease and although she does push me, she does so in a non-scary way and more in a motivating way – and only when she knows I can handle it. So all that fear was for nothing!
Each session leaves me feeling better than the last. I finally know what that exercise high feels like now! After a great cool down/stretch, I always feel like I have pushed my body, but also looked after it and done it bloody good by getting it moving. And there’s nothing quite like that ache the next day…sure it hurts, but weirdly in a good way because you know the more it hurts the harder you’ve worked!
I feel all-around better in my body too. For example, Ino longer feel sluggish or bloated and instead feel toned, even though I don’t quite look it yet! I haven’t been religiously weighing myself or studying my reflection, but I have lost weight since attending and have noticed small differences here and there: my arms feel a lot more toned; I think I’ve shifted a few inches of my waist and I am certainly looking slimmer in the face.
On top of that, I’ve been drinking more water and eating healthier – it’s not an entire life overhaul because I do treat myself to the occasional takeaway, but I feel I even want to less now. I spend an hour every week pushing my body and challenging myself and I no longer see the appeal of then filling it with crap. I eat junk food still for a treat, but I’ve definitely been reaching more for healthy treats such as pitta bread and hummus and fruit – stuff that I know is good and kind to my body.
What I also enjoy about my personal training sessions is that each session is tailored to me; I like trying out new things and am happy for Caroline to attend training and then get me doing it a few days later too or curate and mix it up a bit as much as she wants: she knows what I can and can’t handle. That being said, she’s told me many times that if I want something specific – such as a session of Poundfit or Pilates – then she’s happy to do that too.
I can’t see myself stopping PT sessions anytime soon. Even if I don’t look like I’ve lost weight or even though I can’t suddenly bench press a lot of weight, I know I feel so much better in myself for it!
