Looking for a new music festival to go to this summer? From being super sustainable to dressing up as wild as you can – here are five reasons why you shouldn’t miss Boomtown Fair!
Last summer, I attended Boomtown Fair for the first time ever – and within a day I was already considering it as my favourite all-time festival. I really had no faults about it at all and even though most people have heard about Boomtown Fair, I have been telling people to go ever since! I wasn’t sure what to expect before I first went – and I think so many people are in the same boat that I was. It can be daunting paying all that money for a festival you know little about – so here are five reasons why you shouldn’t miss Boomfair Fair this summer.
The Variety of Music
I was a bit worried before my first Boomtown as I am a rock music fan through and through – and as far as I can see, Boomtown is geared towards more dance music. HOW WRONG I WAS. Of course, it boasts eccentric artists I’ve never heard of or top DJs – but there’s also a huge variety – and this also depends on what stage/area you’re at too. We found some awesome punk bands playing throughout the day, with popular headliners such as Gorillaz in the evening. When we wanted to carry on partying, we found tons of small sweaty tents with DJs playing grime music or dubstep to keep us dancing throughout the night. I never once felt like I wasn’t enjoying the music! This year’s lineup includes Prophets Of Rage, The Streets, Chase and Status, Slaves and more.
It’s Sustainable as F*ck
Boomtown Fair is one of the most sustainable music festivals I know of – and that’s not easy when you keep in mind the size of the entire production. But Boomtown Fair has its own green mission – and this summer it’s Green Week. The festival is currently sharing all the steps it’s taking to be more sustainable. So far, this has included banning all single-use plastic, encouraging attendees to travel greener to the site (by coach, train or the Big Boomtown Bike Ride instead of driving) and launching a dedicated Eco Camp for 2019. How awesome! You can read all about Boomtown’s Green Mission here. Although I’ll definitely be attending anyway, if I wasn’t, hearing about their Green Mission would without a doubt be the reason for me booking my ticket.
You Can Make Your Wardrobe as Creative as You Like
I know most festivals suggest fancy dress or an eccentric wardrobe, but no one does it quite like Boomtown. Wherever you go, people will be dressed up; whether it’s party goers or characters from the different divisions. You can literally dress up however you want – bright and bold or as a specific character or theme! I had lots of fun creating a beautiful floral crown last year, but this year I can’t wait to shop properly for weird and wonderful garments!

Everyone Is So Lovely
I know most festivals bring in a good crowd, but Boomtown is just filled with really lovely people. I’ll always remember walking in for the first time and an actor on stilts coming up to me and saying ‘You’re here at last! We’ve all been waiting for you!’. That moment right there, I knew I’d made the right decision in going. From the people who camp near you all the way down to the cast and crew, everyone I spoke with made me feel so welcome.
It’s Not Just About the Music
Some people like to spend their festival days relaxing with friends or sleeping off a hangover. But if you’re like me and get bored of that, Boomtown has tons on offer throughout their varied districts, from a job centre (where you can find a job to earn Boomtown dollars and later celebrate an office Christmas party) to a slime room! There’s so much going on – and not to mention an actual storyline to follow too. I cannot stress this enough: if you can follow it, do! You’ll end up on a mission exploring different attractions and meeting crazy characters that you wouldn’t otherwise. If this is too much for you, all I can say is don’t be afraid to open odd-looking doors or duck into random doorways: it’s the only way to create amazing weird memories.
And on top of all this, Boomtown Fair is just a really good time overall! Will you be attending this year? Let me know!
