My 2019 Year in Review

20/01/2020
Snapshots from my 2019 Year in Review, including photos of me and a friend posing at the 'Welcome to Las Vegas' sign, a photo of me at the Grand Canyon and an image of the desert in Joshua Tree.

It’s that time again! My end-of-year quiz/year in review. Although I’ve done a post about the last decade overall, I couldn’t not do my usual year in review because it’s always so much fun comparing it to previous years!

WHAT DID YOU DO IN 2019 THAT YOU’D NEVER DONE BEFORE?
I quit a job – or two. One job I quit for a really silly reason (though it felt like the right decision at the time) but luckily, have managed to return to the company. I quit another job due to the effect it was having on my mental health – I completely understand that after a certain amount of time, there were changes I could have made to stop it getting so bad, but I was in a really funny/not great mindset at the time. It all worked out in the end though. I also finally celebrated a glam NYE, whilst in a relationship, and also finally got a kiss at the end of the countdown. It’s the little things, ha.

DID YOU KEEP YOUR NEW YEARS’ RESOLUTIONS, AND WILL YOU MAKE MORE FOR NEXT YEAR?
I actually don’t think I made any!

DID ANYONE CLOSE TO YOU GIVE BIRTH?
Lisa did!

DID ANYONE CLOSE TO YOU DIE?
No.

WHAT PLACES DID YOU VISIT?
America – Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Diego, Tijuana (in Mexico) and a road trip along Route 1. I also finally got to check out Cambridge.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE IN 2020 THAT YOU LACKED IN 2019?
A little more travelling and a few more nights out/hangouts with friends. I was a bit of a social introvert in 2019.

WHAT DATES FROM 2019 WILL REMAIN ETCHED IN YOUR MEMORY, AND WHY?
This is gonna be pretty corny but most memories are related to my boyfriend. The day (well night) we met/had our first date. The conversation we had when we decided to finally give the relationship a chance after messing around for about six months. The day we found out we got the house etc. Also the entire time I spent in America. One memory that stands out was driving through Joshua Tree, listening to some of my favourite road trip songs.

WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT THIS YEAR?
Getting my boyfriend to date me, haha. He didn’t really want a relationship but really liked me, so I persevered.

WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST FAILURE?
I had a month or so where my life kind of just seemed to catapult backwards; my car failed its MOT, I quit my job and I stopped staying at my boyfriend’s/we basically just had a bit of space which felt like a breakup but really wasn’t. It was a tough time but within days of being home again, I soon realized being cooped up in a tiny room together (with me being unable to leave due to not having a car) wasn’t doing us any good! Within a few weeks though, things started to fall back into place and I started moving forwards again. I wouldn’t say this time was a failure, but it definitely felt like it at the time, especially when I quit my job.

DID YOU SUFFER ILLNESS OR INJURY?
Nope.

WHAT WAS THE BEST THING YOU BOUGHT?
Plane tickets to America!

WHO’S BEHAVIOUR MERITED CELEBRATION?
I’m not sure, really. My boyfriend was super supportive of that month or so of me just being entirely stuck, as were my family.

WHO’S BEHAVIOUR MADE YOU APPALLED AND DEPRESSED?
No ones.

WHERE DID MOST OF YOUR MONEY GO?
Travel and food, haha.

WHAT DID YOU GET REALLY EXCITED ABOUT?
Moving in with my boyfriend! I know I was supposed to move in with someone a few years back but he never showed any interest in it (despite it being his idea). This time around it was totally different, Shaun was genuinely excited as I was. We’ve had many hilarious trips to IKEA since.

HAT SONG WILL ALWAYS REMIND YOU OF 2019?
Hmm, that’s a tough one. Music wasn’t a huge priority for me in 2019. I actually don’t know!

COMPARED TO THIS TIME LAST YEAR, ARE YOU:

a) happier or sadder? Happier.
b) thinner or fatter? About the same. I started PT sessions and started getting really fit, but then when I got rid of my car, exercise was no longer a priority so the weight started to pile back on.
c) richer or poorer? Again, about the same. I’ve been more money-savvy this year, but obviously quitting my job didn’t help..

WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU’D DONE MORE OF?
Probably a little more travel – in past years I’ve always managed to get a bit of solo travel in or maybe little weekends away, if not a proper holiday. Apart from America, I didn’t go anywhere else this year.

WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU’D DONE LESS OF?
Nothing, really!

HOW DID YOU SPEND CHRISTMAS?
Christmas was actually really lovely – I did some seasonal things with my boyfriend and went to an escape room/had a surprise dinner with my family and boyfriend for my 30th which was really lovely. Christmas Day I spent at home.

DID YOU FALL IN LOVE IN 2019?
Yes, definitely.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE TV PROGRAM?
My boyfriend had me watch Breaking Bad again after discovering I hadn’t seen the last season and I absolutely loved binging this from start to finish in just a matter of months. I also loved You.

DO YOU HATE ANYONE NOW THAT YOU DIDN’T HATE AT THIS TIME LAST YEAR?
Not really.

WHAT WAS THE BEST BOOK YOU READ?
Again, I, unfortunately, didn’t do much reading in 2019.

WHAT MUSIC DID YOU GET EXCITED ABOUT?
Sumo Cyco. An awesome female-fronted band I didn’t even know existed till my boyfriend and I discovered they were playing at The Craufurd and we popped the gig on our list, as he’s trying to get into music photography so went to shoot them. BLOWN AWAY. They were amazing. It definitely turned me into a fan!

WHAT DID YOU WANT AND GET?
I wanted a new bag, a travel book and some money to put towards the house.

WHAT DID YOU WANT AND NOT GET?
Nothing, I got everything I wanted.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE FILM OF THE YEAR?
I don’t have a favourite but I really liked Hereditary actually – I thought it was really well done and it genuinely scared me. The Joker was also amazing. Oh and Us had me gripped.

WHAT DID YOU DO ON YOUR BIRTHDAY, AND HOW OLD WERE YOU?
I turned 30! I explained what I did above – an escape room and a meal out. My boyfriend also took me to Warwick Castle.

WHAT ONE THING WOULD HAVE MADE YOUR YEAR MORE SATISFYING?
I wish my boyfriend and I would have got together sooner, there was a lot of going back and forth between being just friends and giving each other space haha. I also wish I stuck at/did more PT.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL FASHION CONCEPT IN 2019?
Lazy, really. Haha. A little more grown-up too.

WHAT KEPT YOU SANE?
Musiccccc. And my boyfriend.

WHICH CELEBRITY/PUBLIC FIGURE DID YOU FANCY THE MOST?
Henry Cavill in The Witcher. Oh. My. Lord. I don’t like clean cut men really, so didn’t dig him at all in Superman and wasn’t sure how he’d do in The Witcher. But I still have a really intense crush on him now.

WHAT POLITICAL ISSUE STIRRED YOU THE MOST?
Absolutely everything to do with politics.

WHO DID YOU MISS?
My mum.

WHO WAS THE BEST NEW PERSON YOU MET?
My boyfriend! And my colleague/friend Leah, who I’m happy to be working with again.

TELL US A VALUABLE LIFE LESSON YOU LEARNED IN 2019?
Timing is important, but you can’t force it. Although I wish my boyfriend and I had got together sooner, I feel like what we went through made us appreciate each other more now. Also, I actually matched with him on Tinder and we spoke briefly the previous summer whilst I was in the middle of a horrible break up and I am so, so glad we didn’t meet then. It would have been a complete disaster. I also learned (or remembered anyway) that life has its ups and downs. You can feel like everything has gone to absolute sh*t sometimes, but within just a couple of weeks, everything can turn around completely.

QUOTE A SONG LYRIC THAT SUMS UP YOUR YEAR?
I really can’t think of any!

My 2019 was very varied, as you can see. The year began with me quitting my job to run off and travel and from then on, it was kind of one step forward and two steps back. But isn’t that life in general? As I post this now (in 2020), my life is vividly different: I’m back at a job I absolutely adore (though it’s filled with challenges – it’s ones I thrive off of!), I’m settled in a really lovely relationship with someone who is also my best friend and genuinely supports me and has my best interests at heart and I’ve finally moved out and live in my own house. Somehow I think 2020 is only going to get better…

How was your 2019? Let me know!
