Around about this time last year, I was moving back home after a failed relationship and an ill-fated attempt to live alone for the first time in my life.
We all know how that one turned out.
Despite attempting to live alone and make it work…I failed.
So I returned home with my tail between my legs, ever thankful that I still had my old room at home. And my Dad, bless his soul, welcomed me with open arms. He immediately insisted a room makeover was in order to cheer me up.
It actually took until March of this year to put this plan into action. After months of deciding over themes and colours, throwing out so much junk and finally buggaring off to America so he could have a solid two weeks to get in there and redecorate without me around.
When I arrived home, my room looked so different. Beforehand it had been dark, painted in a light purple but accessorised with dark purple deco and, well, so much tit-tat. My Dad changed it to a complete haven – bright, white walls, minimal accessories and so much space. I couldn’t even believe it was the same room – I still can’t! Unfortunately, I have no photos of how the room was before (unless it means revealing my terrible Myspace poses over the years) but I can still finally share what it looks like now.
As you can see, I’ve gone for a (slightly) minimal look with geometric shelves and, finally, a blogging area! My ladder shelf is something I’ve wanted for so long, although it’s beginning to get a little cluttered again. I’ve got my letter board on top with my amazing homemade headpiece/crown I took to Boomtown, then, beneath, a photo of my mum and I and my certificate from passing my burlesque exam. Beneath that, I have Roger the paper mache skull and my travel savings box, and on the bottom two shelves: books and a jewellery box.
I also have my FIRST EVER real living plant (gifted to me by my Nan who insisted it barely needed watering and would be impossible to kill…we’ll see about that…) and an actual proper desk and blogging area!

This is my bed area! This is the one area of the room that still needs a little work – for example, the pictures lying across the top shelf are to be popped up above my bed to make a statement wall. The shelves my dad designed and put together himself, which is amazing! I also treated myself to a new bed – an original Hybrid® Mattress by Simba and my gosh, it is the comfiest bed I’ve ever slept in. I’m a strong believer that a good night’s sleep is one of the most important things you should aim for to be healthy, and my bed is my absolute haven. Next is to redo the headboard and choose a new colour for the curtains, but overall it’s a nifty little area. I also want a new radiator! The white matches the theme of the room, but I’ve been looking at more stylish contemporary radiators and think perhaps a rose gold one would be a good statement piece.

Luckily, I was kindly gifted this desk in return for a review a few years back and had to fight tooth and nail with my ex for permission to come and take it back from his flat. I recently added the office chair after eyeing up this style of chair for months on Facebook marketplace but always just missing out on getting them. And I even put this together myself, very hungover one Sunday morning!
I usually have my bin beneath my desk and my laundry basket beside it but it’s overflowing a little at the moment so I’ve missed that out of these photos!
Beside my desk and running along the back wall I still have my wardrobe with mirrored doors, which gives the room an illusion of being much bigger.
My wardrobe is far too messy to share right now but perhaps in future I’ll share a photo of inside as it was also built by my Dad. I have a big TV which is hidden away when the doors are closed, lots of craft bits and I am slowly working my way towards a capsule wardrobe. But one entire side of my wardrobe is just for dresses alone, oops.
Overall, that’s it though! Nearly all of my accessories have been from Primark (like my shelves) and Wish, and the ladder shelf was about £30 from Homebase. It’s amazing how just getting rid of stuff I don’t need has made the biggest difference though and created space.
Though it may be small, the white walls and mirrored wardrobe makes it seem so spacious, especially now that I’ve thrown out so much stuff I no longer need. I have kept all my travel-related bits though of course!
What do you think? Are you a fan of the minimal look? Let me know!
