My Mexico Travel Diary: Day Five – Bacalar

The dock of Bacalar's Lagoon of Seven Colours. In this photo, you can just about make out two different shades of blue in the distance, as the photo is taken from a restaurant overlooking the water.

After my adventures in Palenque, I was looking forward to something a bit more laid back: a cruise on the Lagoon of Seven Colours.

We began our day with another long drive to Bacalar. We got up super early, but one bonus of this was the chance to see the beautiful Mexican sunrise. Unfortunately, Delai wasn’t feeling too good and halfway through the drive we pulled up and relaxed for a while whilst he took some medication and had a nap.

This was actually sort of nice though, as we only stopped in a roadside cafe and spent the time playing some games to help us all get to know each other better which was fun.

Once we arrived in Bacalar, we stopped for lunch at a lovely seafood restaurant overlooking the lagoon. We then had a lovely sunset cruise! I actually took barely any photos that day as my phone was low on battery. The cruise was so nice though.

I’m not sure why it’s known as the Lagoon of Seven Colours – as it’s actually two colours. But it sure is pretty regardless!

We even had the opportunity to stop and have a little swim, right above an underwater cenote. That was kind of scary – swimming off the ‘ledge’ and looking down to see nothing but darkness below you. Even though it was just a brief boat ride, it was nice and picturesque. Plus the laid-back day was just what we needed, ready to prepare for the rest of our adventures.
