A podcast, a documentary and a TV series: three disturbing and horror-themed things I’m desperate to check out right now!
I write about entertainment a fair bit on this blog, usually sharing my recommendations for what I’ve been watching or any games I’ve discovered lately. Today, however, I thought it would be interesting to write about some ‘horror’ things I’m desperate to get into but haven’t had time to yet!
Full disclosure: many of these suggestions have come from things spoken about on My Favourite Murder.
The Series | Chernobyl
I know I’m really late getting around to not even watching it yet and I feel like there’s little I can say about this because everyone has been talking about it and everyone knows what it’s all about. But the Chernobyl disaster is something that has absolutely fascinated me for most of my life and it’s on my bucket list to visit. I’m taking my time before watching this because I’ve been told it doesn’t just focus on the disaster, it’s also a political drama – which means I’m going to have to really concentrate. However, I also know I’ll probably be watching the entire thing in one evening.
The Documentary | Cabin 28
Another one I discovered from My Favourite Murder, Cabin 28 is a documentary based around the incredibly disturbing case of The Keddie Murders. This is one case that really stuck with me after listening to MFM and not many do (because, to be honest, a lot of murders I already know about). The Keddie Murders is basically the weird case of an unsolved 1981 American quadruple homicide that took place in a tiny cabin with many inconsistencies and unanswered questions. If you’ve got the stomach for it – check it out or watch the documentary – it’s a fascinating subject. It’s also been rumoured that 2008 horror movie The Strangers is based on the subject, although this hasn’t been confirmed.
The Podcast | The First Degree
As explained before, I absolutely love My Favourite Murder but I’ve been keeping an ear out for a more varied podcast that covers more than just murder and instead focuses on creepy/paranormal stuff in general. I gave The Last Podcast on The Left a few more listens but unfortunately, I just cannot get into it. And so I’ve turned to former scene queen Jak Vanek and have found myself curious about her new podcast with Alexis Linkletter and Billy Jensen. I’ve had a long love/hate relationship with Jak, I hated scene queens growing up but her Insta feed is just so on point that I had to unfollow not once but twice because I was just so damn jealous of her glamorous lifestyle, haha. But now that she’s dating my fave: Jared from The Maine, I love her again.
The First Degree launched in late 2018 and focuses on just all the weird sh*t from scary hairy bodybuilders/dog like creatures to haunted dolls. So it’s pretty varied.
I’m going to leave this post here because if I carry on I’ll probably never finish! I have a long list written in my notebook but it honestly makes me feel a little overwhelmed and nervous to look at it and wonder how the f*ck I’m going to find the time to check everything out! Luckily, these three things are easily caught up with: Chernobyl is actually only a mini series of five episodes, Cabin 28 is a documentary that can be watched in one sitting and The First Degree is, at the time of writing, only on episode 46 – so plenty of time to catch up!
What about you? Have you checked out any of the above? Or do you have any related entertainment or reading material to recommend? Let me know!
