A Guide to Spending Halloween at Home

30/10/2019
A pile of old Halloween movie DVD's is piled up, next to some burning black candles. In front of the candles is a large bowl of popcorn.

It’s (almost) the most wonderful time of the year! Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on which way you want to look at it), Halloween falls on a weeknight this year, which means that for everyone who hates the cold or socialising too much, it’s the perfect excuse to spend Halloween at home.

Here’s my guide to spending a cosy Halloween night at home.

You can’t go wrong with an evening spent cuddling up on the sofa (or behind a pillow!) and watching some scary movies. The scarier the better, I say! If you love to be really creeped out, you can’t go wrong with The Fourth Kind, Insidious or Hereditary. It takes a lot to really creep me out – and these three movies get me every time. For blood and gore, a Saw marathon might be more fitting – whereas if you’re a fan of the classic 90s horror flicks, mix it up with Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer and Flatliners (but the remake is just as good). Want something new and exciting? Some of Netflix’s top horror releases this year include In The Tall Grass or Haunted.

When you’ve had enough (or you’re tipsy enough), head to the lighter flicks like Eli (so, so bad that it’s good – if you’re drunk) or Stranger Things!

For me, I’m generally quite happy with my favourite crisps but I do love a corny Halloween related food item to get into the mood. Tesco’s Haunted Pizza is always a good idea (who doesn’t like pizza?!) and Spooky blackberry cupcakes with marshmallow skulls (I’m trying to pick the easy things here!), whereas ASDA’s Black toffee apples look horribly gothic. If all else fails? Literally just order pizza. Calories don’t count on Halloween..

Ah. The best part. The cocktails. In my experience, trying to replicate Pinterest cocktails turns out even worse than Halloween recipes (don’t ask me how) but it’s always worth trying anyway because even if the end result sucks, it’s still alcohol, am I right?! Oh, and of course we’re all still going to try and make them even if we don’t like the cocktail of choice – because who cares what it tastes like, as long as it looks good?! I’m loving the look of: Black Magic Shimmering Cocktail, The Witches Heart and The Jack Skellington Cocktail, of course. If you really can’t be bothered with the faff, just get a Halloween ice cube tray and throw some skull-shaped ice cubes into your favourite drink. Simple.

Pumpkins and candles. That’s pretty much all you need – oh and a cosy blanket too, of course. If you really want to go all out, plenty of places like Primark and B&M still have lots of cute Halloween accessories. Alternatively, you can check out my Halloween Pinterest board for some cool Halloween ~vibes~. It’ll definitely give you plenty of time to plan for next year! I’m already desperate for a Halloween-decorated bar cart next year.

Halloween doesn’t always have to be about dressing up, partying hard and dealing with weekend-long hangovers. Staying in is just as fun – as I’ve proved above. And if you still want to go out? This year you can do both!
