Here are some resources to support the Black Lives Matter Movement. Now a time to stand up, stand together and make a change.
I’m not sure where to even begin with this post. I’ve always considered myself as a non-racist person and as a supporter of black lives. I’ve always called out any racism I’ve seen or heard taking place around me. I have tried my best to understand the issues black people may face. Although, I do understand that as a white person, I am automatically privileged and will never really understand their true suffering.
But lately I’ve realized that really isn’t enough. And although I may still say the wrong words or still feel overwhelmed of where to begin with my support – any support is better then nothing.
My blog post about some resources I have found helpful during this time is just a pin-drop in the ocean of the thousands of resources that have been shared over the last week or so. I am pleased to see that people are still continuing to share this support. I’m pleased that people are beginning to realise that the Black Lives Matter movement isn’t just a fad. It stands for, unfortunately, something black people have to deal with every single day.
So, here are some resources I am finding helpful. Some resources I am bookmarking to educate myself further and hopefully some resources that my readers can use too.
Petitions to Sign
Even if you cannot afford to donate money right now, it takes just seconds to sign a petition online! Please remember to take that extra step to confirm your email address to. Your signature won’t be added without it.
Justice For George Floyd | Justice For Breonna Taylor | Suspend UK export of tear gas, rubber bullets and riot shields to USA | Make Black History compulsory in the civil service, NHS and schools | National Action Against Police Brutality
You can find a more comprehensive list of petitions to sign here. There’s also zipcodes to use if you can’t sign because you are international.
Books to Read
Go a step beyond donating money or signing petitions, educate yourselves into why these donations are necessary. Read books from the point of view of someone who has actually suffered from these issues. Learn about why racism exists and the changes we can make to stop it. I have linked to Goodreads for ease here. But these books are available online, at most bookstores, Amazon, charity shops etc.
Noughts & Crosses by Malorie Blackman | Queenie by Candice Carty Williams | Girl, Women, Other by Bernadine Evaristo | Why I’m No Longer Talking To White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge | White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism by Robin DiAngelo, PhD | Don’t Touch My Hair by Emma Dabiri | This Book Is Anti-Racist: 20 Lessons on How to Wake Up, Take Action, and Do the Work by Tiffany Jewell and Aurelia Durand | Becoming by Michelle Obama
You can also find a longer list on my Goodreads here. I have created a ‘to be read’ bookshelf for Anti Racist books. This includes books on how to take action, the developments of racial identity and fiction from amazing black writers too. I will continue to update this list.
Things to Watch
Educate yourselves even further by sitting down to watch some of the following.
When They See Us (Miniseries – Netflix) | 13th (Documentary – Netflix) | Get Out (Movie – Netflix)| Black Feminism & the Movement for Black Lives: Barbara Smith, Reina Gossett, Charlene Carruthers (Video – Youtube) | When They See Us (Series – Netflix)
Further Reading
I’ve come across some really informative blog posts filled to the brim with resources. It’s lovely to see that some people are continuing to publish helpful blog posts past the black squares on Instagram!
Anti-Racism Resources for White People by Emily Underworld | Ways To Support The Black Lives Matter Movement Now & Forever by From Roses | Here’s How You Can Show Up for People of Colour and Be Anti-racist by Daisy Butter | 101+ Black Owned Businesses to Discover & Support by InTheFrow | An Anti-Racist Reading List for All Ages by Beth Sandland
And there’s also a really comprehensive Anti-racism for white people Google Doc here.
This blog post is just a drop in the ocean of thousands of further resources or ways you can help make a change. I don’t really know how to sum up this post, except to urge you all to do something. Anything. Even if it’s something as small as picking up a book or making a donation – every little thing is better than nothing at all! Ask questions, call out racism you see and educate yourselves further.
