Featuring a suicidal dog, a fuck boy prince charming and plenty of crude jokes, this isn’t your Nan’s kind of pantomime – but it sure will get you into the Christmas spirit!
I recently had the opportunity to head to The Vaults and check out Cinderella with/on behalf of Love Pop Ups: London. I enjoy anything that takes place at The Vaults. It’s such a quirky setting and any show or experience that takes place there is totally immersive.
We arrived and immediately took our seats in a makeshift pub in the heart of The Vaults. Though there were bleachers on each side of the setup, attendees also had the chance to sit down in the middle of the area. They could also sit around wobbly tables or on old red velvet bar stools at the actual bar. The ‘pub’ was decorated like any other classic pub for Christmas with fairy lights, kitschy tinsel and a little tree.

After an order of beer (and a packet of crisps), I took my seat amongst the rest of our group. I was unaware that I had just been served by Cinderella herself!
It wasn’t long before the show started. We were introduced to an array of modern characters – a f*ckboy prince charming, a cougar stepmother and, erm, a suicidal dog. I won’t give the story away – as we all know the story of Cinderella. However, this modern adaptation certainly has some twists – but the entire show/evening was hilarious.
My Review of Cinderella at The Vaults
Cinderella is acted out with the audience in the heart of it. Characters socialise with the audience or come up to sing to them. There are plenty of sing-alongs (and a karaoke afterwards!) to join in with too. It’s effortlessly funny with a very relatable humour. Who hasn’t fallen for a f*ckboy and immediately regretted it?!
I couldn’t pick one favourite character. Everyone played their part so well, but the Ugly Sisters were hilarious. I absolutely loved how the Stepmother was portrayed. She was a cougar – but a very classy one!
Of course, it is essentially a Christmas panto too – but this isn’t your Nan’s kind of panto. There are crude jokes and dodgy dancing. I particularly enjoyed all the men getting involved in a very hilarious re-creation of Dizzee Rascal’s Dance Wiv Me. There’s lots of drinking too. I’m not usually one for pantos but this one? It’s worth heading into London for.
I will note though – even if you’re not a fan of being involved and you’re quite wary of being forced out of your shell – you’ll still enjoy this. Pick a seat in the bleachers to be part of the fun – but not full of the action. You’ll still have a great time.
With a couple of beers down me, trashy tinsel everywhere and an array of Christmas belters that everyone joined in with, I couldn’t help but immediately find myself drawn into the Christmas spirit.
