My Review of Tupi London

09/08/2019
Four different beverages on a wooden table against a tropical bird and foliage wallpaper by TUPI London. Includes a cocktail, a smoothie, and two juices.

On Monday, I spoke about being kindly invited to pop down and review The London Dungeons.Following the experience, the Love Pop Ups: London girls and I grabbed lunch at Tupi London and, later on, headed to an escape room. It was a jampacked day!

I was over the moon to have the opportunity to pop down and review this casual but sweet and stylish eatery in Elephant and Castle. The sun was shining upon arrival and the doors to the restaurant were thrown wide open. This flooded the funky deco with not only lots of natural light but a genuine lovely summer afternoon brunch feel.

Though the space was small, we enjoyed the laid-back vibes it had to offer. We all piled into a table in the corner and immediately looked through the cocktail menu. I, of course, ordered a Mojito (hair of the dog) but took a while to decide on my food. Everything sounded so tasty but so healthy and filling too!

A refreshing mojito cocktail in a glass filled with crushed ice, garnished with fresh mint, against a tropical-themed backdrop with bird illustrations at Tupi London.

It was clear this was a place offering a healthy South American menu, but everything sounded so filling too. You know when you crave something healthy but just know a small salad or Buddha bowl isn’t going to fill you up? This wasn’t the case here. Healthy or not – I knew I’d be walking away with a full stomach.

A plate with two grilled parrilla chorizo on a bed of arugula with a side of creamy sauce, next to a glass of mint-infused cocktail with ice and a black straw from on a wooden table.

I opted for grilled parrilla chorizo with chimichurri aioli (a tasty accompanying sauce) for starters. The girls went for boneless chicken thighs, crispy squid and spicy prawns and scampi. My starter was perfect – not too small and not too large. Just the right amount of food to start me off without leaving me too full for my main! It was delicious and the chorizo had a great kick to it, complimented well with the sauce.

Next, for the main, I chose a halloumi burger: grilled halloumi, red peppers, greek yoghurt and rocket. I also chose a side of chips. The burger was delicious and tasty, but I wasn’t entirely keen on the sauce. It didn’t taste quite like greek yoghurt and they’d also added some feta cheese to the burger (I think!) which meant the cheese overall was a little overbearing. I also felt the halloumi – though tasty – could have been grilled for a while longer. It lacked that distinctive slightly burnt and rubbery texture that we all love halloumi to have.

A burger with fries on a blue plate, next to a ketchup blob on a wooden table with silverware beside it.
A burger with a thick red patty, arugula, and melted cheese on a sesame bun, served next to a small metal bowl of ketchup.

That being said, it wasn’t bad at all – just not quite what I expected. I still ate as much as I could and thought it was tasty – and the chips hit the spot too.

Elsewhere, the girls chose Muqueca (a Brazilian seafood stew), spicy seafood linguine and Arroz Verde, which was a risotto dish with peas and asparagus. Though I did not try them, all looked super tasty – especially the risotto. I particularly liked that the stew (and spicy pawns in a sauce starter before) came with bread. This is an obvious choice that not all places seem to offer unless it’s soup!

Overall, the food was tasty and a good price. I also felt the vibe and decor of the restaurant complemented the food well. It’s definitely the ideal place for an afternoon brunch with friends or a catch-up with a family member. I’d certainly love to return to work my way through the rest of the menu (the roast chicken sounded delicious and I’m still regretting not trying some of Bianca’s risotto!). Even better yet is that it’s right by the tube, meaning it’s the perfect excuse to hop off for a bite to eat one afternoon.

If you’re ever looking for a tasty and relaxed brunch (that is healthy too!), Tupi should be your first choice!
