I love zombies and I love gaming – so what’s not to love about Resident Evil 2? Here’s my Review of Resident Evil 2.
I tend to buy games as of when; when they are cheap enough or when I’m bored or whatever I’m playing. But I couldn’t help treating myself to the new Resident Evil 2 game as soon as payday rolled around! I hadn’t used my Xbox One for anything much other than Netflix lately, so Resident Evil 2 was a no-brainer!
I’d played the demo but the last Resident Evil game I’d played was years and years ago. Well, apart from a brief attempt at Biohazard. So I was eager to see how the new one lived up to my expectations.
Resident Evil 2 – My Review
I played as Claire Redfield, of course, and played most evenings for about a week to complete it. I was extremely impressed. Previous Resident Evil games always managed to put me on edge, but Resident Evil 2 raised the tension in ways I didn’t even know were possible. Within the past hour or so of playing, I already deemed it as one of the scariest games yet. However, each time I got to a new level and encountered new monsters/scares, I continuously deemed each section more scary than the last!
Despite being quite well versed on anything related to zombies, I found battling the zombies in this game harder than ever. For starters, a simple headshot did nothing to deter them! At times this annoyed me as a) it’s not really a traditional zombie then, is it? Alsio, b) I am quite a bad shooter so I constantly ran out of ammo! This was because each zombie needed up to five or six shots to ‘kill’!
However, I did like that this game felt a bit more modern because of this. Overall, the game felt more modern but whilst keeping in with the traditional vibe of the Resident Evil world. I was thoroughly impressed!
I also loved how there were different zombies; all dependent on different parts of the game. It meant the scares were constant and I never quite knew what to expect. I spent much of the time screaming, I’m not going to lie.
As for bosses, each one was tougher than the last which drove me mad. One of the final battles had me so frustrated. In fact, I had to take a step back from the game for a few evenings. In the end, took me multiple evenings to complete! But this is by no means a bad thing.
The one thing I will say is that I actually despised Mr X. He wasn’t scary looking (only really bloody ugly!) and although he was very scary (hearing his footsteps searching for me certainly had me on edge), he was even more so annoying.
In Conclusion
I also felt – though the tension of the police station area of the game worked well – the layout of it was complicated when it didn’t need to be. It meant that in parts, you had to run around for a long time to get from one area to another. This was because part of it was still sectioned off for example. But maybe I did miss some parts as other areas/doors opened up within time or by finding certain objects.
I think Resident Evil 2 is one of my favourite games yet. And not just from the Resident Evil series but overall. Apart from the unnecessary annoyance of Mr X (and points related to the police station), I have nothing but praise for this game.
I would definitely recommend Resident Evil 2 for all fans of horror games and, whether you’re a fan of the old Resident Evil games or you’re new to the franchise – either way you’re going to love it.
