5 Ways I’m Keeping Busy Whilst Working from Home

A cosy living room corner features white shelves filled with books and decorative items. A large flat-screen TV, displaying Netflix, is placed to the right. A pink yoga mat, a laptop, a cushion, and a brick accent wall are visible—perfect for keeping busy whilst working from home. A window lets in natural light.

I’ve decided to create a list of things keeping me busy whilst WFH (Working From Home) Especially considering the fact that for my first week of being self-isolated, pretty much all I did was work and play The Sims! I LOVE The Sims, but it’s hardly productive!

My situation is a pretty lucky one. I’ve only recently moved into my first home and my boyfriend works funny hours. This allows him three days at work followed by three days at home – so I get the space I need but I’m also not overwhelmed with loneliness. There’s a quote that’s been going around at the moment, saying “we are safe at home – not stuck at home”. And this really resonated with me.

Yes, it’s a pretty sucky situation. But it could be worse. We’re all safe. I can’t see my family, but I can still Facetime or call them. I’m not alone. I can work from home safely. So I’m choosing to spend my time wisely! Often, when working full time, I’d hope just for an extra day or two off once a month so I could ‘adult’ and do those things that couldn’t get done outside of work hours – and now I have all the time in the world. Here’s how I’m staying busy whilst being safe at home.

Blogging

There’s so much ‘behind the scenes’ stuff I need to do with my blog. I just haven’t had the time to do until now! I need to work back through my old posts and tidy them up and make them more SEO/keyword-friendly. There’s post plans I want to put in place (and posts I need to write..!). And, probably the most important, I need to update my press kit! I’m also slowly working my way through Lyrical Host’s Navigating SEO course which I want to get on with more. Finally, I want to focus on upping my engagement on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

House Stuff

The house is already in need of a spring clean. There’s still a small pile of unpacked stuff to sort through. The biggest problem at the moment is the lack of storage, so I’ve got lots of craft stuff with no place to go. The conservatory has also become a dumping ground for cardboard boxes. Even if we can’t get to the dump right now, I want to fold them all down and put them in the car so at least we have space in the conservatory. It’s going to be a long time before we can actually make proper use out of it. But at least it won’t look messy.

Entertainment

There’s so much I need to catch up on via streaming services and it’s hard to finish old series when the list keeps growing! Primarily, I need to finish shows like The Vampire Diaries and Supernatural before moving onto all the new good stuff. I also love true crime but I struggle to stick with each show. I’ve watched a few episodes of The Staircase, Making a Murderer, Evil Genius and The People vs. O.J. Simpson – but never got around to finishing them. I need to stick to them! My problem is that I find them fascinating but if they’re a little slow, I tend to pick up my phone during the less exciting moments and then I’m a goner.

I also need to catch up on the podcasts My Dad Wrote A Porno and My Favourite Murder. I’ve also just ordered a few new books online to get stuck into next week. This includes Ask Again, Yes (which was next month’s book pub book), Hidden Bodies (book two in the You series – the first book was SO good!) and Charlotte Street. I also ordered The Flatshare (recommended by Katie in her latest blog post – because you can’t go wrong with a chick-lit book!).

Self Care

I want to spend this time looking after my skin a bit more but mostly my body overall! Additionally, I need to get back into the habit of drinking more water. I’m excited to start working out at home. I want to ideally start with morning yoga or meditation sessions. Then afternoon or evening workouts with Caroline or some Pound Fit.

I need to remember to always make use of being able to leave the house for a walk or a run. This isn’t too hard – especially if walking downstairs and switching on the TV is all I need to do to start a morning yoga session, but it’s just the ‘getting going’ part that I’m struggling with at the moment! MyBurlesque is also launching online classes which I can’t wait to get stuck into – as I haven’t been able to attend classes for the last couple of months.

Hobbies

I really want to take up some hobbies I haven’t had much time to do lately. Cross stitch is a big one as I find it so relaxing and another new hobby is Warhammer! Warhammer is basically this cool little hobby/game where you collect little figurines which you put together yourself and paint, then play a game with them. I have yet to play a game because it’s taken me so long to paint my first army, but it’s something my boyfriend has always been passionate about so it’s nice for us to do something together.

Before I met him, I’d never even heard of Warhammer – although interestingly enough, it turns out my mum’s best friend’s husband was really into it so my brother and my sister used to paint figurines long before I was born! So they know all about it. I’ll probably do a whole blog post about this at some point because it is really, really cool.

I also really want to play the new Resident Evil 3 when it comes out, but I’m holding off on it because still haven’t finished the second run of RE2 yet and I want to focus on more productive things before gaming. So I’m going to wait and see how I get on with the other bits first.

In Conclusion

There are a few other things I’d also like to do – experiment more with cooking and sort out my bloody hair (it’s currently in a weird in-between blonde and brown phase at the moment) but these aren’t really possible at this current time – unless we get to a point where we’re no longer buying just essential food that is!

There’s a lot to do so it’s hard not to feel overwhelmed – but I’m going to dedicate one day a week to each ‘thing’ in this list if I can. Perhaps I’ll focus on blogging on Mondays, house stuff on Tuesdays etc. It’s not a ‘must-do’ list, but just one I want in place for when I feel a little bit lost. Recently I’ve had lots of time on my hands obviously and have spent that time playing The Sims because I’ve felt overwhelmed with what other stuff I can be doing and either a) not knowing where to start or b) forgetting! So having this blog post/list in place will hopefully help.

What are you going to be spending your time doing – if you’re in a position lucky enough to have free time now?
