Why I’m So Obsessed with Gousto (And You Should Be Too)

A recipe card for "Cheesy Pepperoni Chicken With Crispy Potatoes" from Gousto is atop various fresh vegetables, including onions, potatoes, and greens. The Gousto card features an image of the plated dish, showcasing sliced chicken, roasted potatoes, and a side salad.

I’ve recently signed up to Gousto and I am obsessed. It makes cooking so easy and means we’re always eating a real variety of meals, cooking from fresh.

To put things into perspective, I’ve never been good at cooking. I was never really taught to cook and, sadly, failed to inherit my mum’s love of baking. I’m definitely not one of those people who can open a fridge and just throw something together. However, I will say that things changed when I first began to do Veganuary. I was forced to become more creative with my cooking and, through trial and error, I slowly began to enjoy cooking.

I’m still not great – but I have got to the point where I more or less enjoy the process. Unless it’s a really tough meal with various timings – then I get stressed out!

Late last year when I ‘unofficially’ moved into my boyfriends (aka still lived at home but moved my toothbrush in within a week of dating and ended up spending about 85% of my time there), we decided to give Gousto a go. The reason was because he lived in a shared house. Food often went missing. the kitchen was dirty and it just wasn’t a nice situation to cook in. We usually ended up living off takeaways! This was far too unhealthy. So we decided to sign up for Gousto with a discount code and essentially never looked back after that.

There are so many reasons why I love Gousto and why I think everyone should consider it. Especially when there are so many food subscription boxes out there.

It Seems Expensive – But It’s Actually Affordable Once You Break It Down

We sign up for a weekly box of four meals, which works out at about £35.00 a week/£140 a month. That’s just £70 a month each. Considering we used to spend so much on takeaways, this is actually quite cheap. We have taken the time to think about if the price alone is really worth it – after all, it’s four dinners a week and obviously doesn’t include breakfast or lunch items. Could we buy the same ingredients elsewhere on a weekly shop? I don’t think so. We practically buy everything from ALDI, so splurging a little on dinners isn’t something that’s an issue – especially when we make lunch in bulk and tend to have fruit or smoothies for breakfast. Additionally, I do think buying all the ingredients individually would come to about £70 or more = so the price is definitely worth it in my eyes.

The Meals Are Super Delicious

We’ve probably tried around 45-50 different recipes during the time that we’ve been signed up to Gousto and out of all of them, I can honestly say only three or four recipes we didn’t enjoy – and that wasn’t even because they didn’t taste nice, it’s usually just because it wasn’t quite our thing or the one time our cooker didn’t cook chips properly, haha. The recipes are always so full of flavour and taste so good.

..And the Recipes Are Always Varied

Each time you pick your menu there’s an ‘Everyday Favourites’ tab of ten classic meals that never change – in case you just want something standard. There’s a three-cheese veg pasta bake on this tab which we order probably every single month because it’s so good – so I absolutely love that there are some favourites you can get time and time again. However, each week you also have a selection of up to 40 recipes to choose from – from healthy choices, meat-free meals or sometimes collaborations with Wagamamas or Joe Wicks. You never run out of choice and there’s always something you’re bound to like.

The variety of recipes is the real selling point for me – I love how it gets us cooking new things, trying different recipes etc. Cooking together is something my boyfriend and I love to do, so it brings that element/hobby into our relationship too. Even if I worked out that the price alone was too expensive for what it was, I would probably still sign up for Gousto because I think you also pay for such an amazing variety.

It’s Great for the Environment

For each recipe, they send you the exact amount of what you need. Each sauce or spice is measured out exactly meaning nothing gets wasted too. This is easier for me as I am terrible at measuring things out). You also get a handy email suggesting the best order to eat recipes in – aka what may go out of date first. Some parts could use less plastic, but overall I’ve even seen changes since we signed up. For example, rice packets used to be plastic but they no longer arrive in plastic. Everything arrives in a recyclable box and chilled items in an eco chill box. So it’s definitely one of the most sustainable subscription boxes I’ve come across. You can read more about Gousto’s pledge to cut their plastic use by 50% here – it’s a really interesting read!

It’s Really Easy.. Even If You Can’t Cook

The instructions are super easy to understand and cooking time is rarely over 35 minutes. Plus all the measurements are already measured for you. It’s really impressive to cook what looks like an amazing, tasty meal with not much prep at all!

Gousto is such a great alternative to spending weeknight evenings wondering what to cook. Or overspending at the supermarket because you’re shopping hungry. It’s great for money saving and I honestly cannot recommend it enough.

I’ve written this post to share my experiences with Gousto but I am not partnered with the brand. I just like sharing things I love! That being said, if you’d like to try this fab recipe subscription box, you can get 60% off your first box and 30% off all boxes in your first month by using my affiliate code (or rather my boyfriend’s affiliate code!): SHAUN36038679.

Would you try Gousto? Or are you signed up for any meal subscription boxes? Let me know!
