Whether you’re an avid gamer yourself or just want something fun to do as a couple, one of the best ways to spend time together is to obviously just get stuck in and game together! Here are some of my favourite video games for couples to play together.
My boyfriend is a much bigger gamer than I am (although I also love gaming! I just don’t think I could call myself a ‘gamer’), so I’m well aware of what it’s like to chill out on the sofa, watching him play the latest releases such as The Last of Us 2 (too sad! I haven’t yet found the heart to play it myself!). Of course, this is fun, but it gets to the point where there’s only so much time you can spend watching someone else play.
In my mind, co-op gaming is the answer! Even if neither of you are gamers, I think playing a game on co-op is such a great way to reconnect as a couple. I found that there aren’t actually that many games you can play on co-op – or sometimes it can be tough to find a happy medium and a game you both like. Plus, I am terrible at shooters for example – so I’m no good with games like Fortnite – and have no interest in games along the lines of Fifa etc. I also gravitate more towards easygoing whimsical games which aren’t always my boyfriend’s cup of tea either. So I thought I’d share which video games for couples I think are really fun to play together and that can be likeable by all.
I will note that one of the biggest drawbacks of playing co-op games is the lack of cross-platform games! Not everybody wants to play something on a split screen, I don’t know anyone that owns more than one of each console and I prefer playing on an Xbox, whereas my boyfriend is a PC gamer more than anything else. However, if you can get on with PC gaming, two laptops or a desktop and laptop usually suffice. You can learn a little more about cross-platform gaming here and a list of some games that can be played across different platforms.

RESIDENT EVIL 5
I think there are a couple of other Resident Evil games that you can play on co-op, but Resident Evil 5 is said to be one of the best (for co-op) and I can personally vouch for that. It’s perfect for couples who love horror/zombie games or easy shooter games. This works particularly well because as you navigate the storyline, you genuinely have to rely on each other to get through the game – if one of you gets attacked by a zombie and is low on health, the other has to run over (within an allocated amount of time) to help heal the other before they die! It’s really fun – as well as the right amount of scary. Plus, dare I say, kind of romantic in a weird way? You save each other’s lives! I’d recommend grabbing a bunch of snacks (onion rings are always my go-to treat!) and trying to pull a couple of all-nighters to complete RE5!
Multiplayer is available on PC, PlayStation 3+4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One.
IT TAKES TWO
We recently played It Takes Two and it’s definitely one of the best games I’ve ever played. The premise is that you play as a couple who are on the brink of divorce, but the fallout of this is affecting the couple’s daughter, Rose. Rose manages to turn the couple into tiny dolls, which is where you come in. You navigate a fun and unique world – often ‘helped’ along by a relationship therapy book called Dr. Hakim – in a bid to make it back to your actual bodies and become human again. Taking place across split-screen, this game is heaps of fun. It relies on lots of teamwork, with each level as unique as the last. There are also lots of real-life values to learn within the game, like not giving up on your passions. As well as the really beautiful themed levels, there are lots of mini-games you can return to and play once you’ve completed the game. I lost at EVERY SINGLE ONE. But I still absolutely loved it!
It Takes Two is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch.
STARDEW VALLEY
Obviously, I’m going to mention Stardew Valley! If you like really easy and chill gaming, then you’ll love this game. SV is really fun to play both alone or with others, but there is just something really cute about playing as a couple. You can build up your farm together, decorate it how you like, go mining or fishing together and work together to create a living. But as you can create relationships with other characters when you play solo, this is also available when you play together! You can get married and have children in the game (very cute if you’re already pretty serious/married in real life!) – or if that’s too much for you, I’ve even seen streams of people literally just playing hide and seek with their other half within the game. The game is open-ended too and easy to play, so you can pick it up as often as you like throughout your time together. I think Stardew Valley is without a doubt one of the best video games for couples to play together.
Multiplayer is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Switch and Xbox One. At the moment, you are required to have a copy/individual screen each, however, the game’s upcoming update will allow for split-screen!

WORLD OF WARCRAFT
I got into playing World of Warcraft during the Covid-19 lockdowns and absolutely loved being able to explore this vast and beautiful world without leaving my house. WOW is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game that can be very fun – but very consuming, depending on how you play!
Playing with others is often the best way to play and with all the individual worlds that make up WOW, it’s great for couples too. In fact, my boyfriend even met his ex on WOW (via mutual friends), as they all ended up in a guild together! WOW is great for long-term gaming in that you can constantly level up your character and take on new goals, but you can also play alone/without your partner too.
Multiplayer is available on PC and macOS.
MARIO KART
And finally…Mario Kart. If you don’t have a lot of time on your hands to invest in a storyline game and you’re competitive, then Mario Kart is a no-brainer! You can jump on for a quick couple of games before dinner or make a night out of it to discover the ultimate winner (cocktails and snacks are very necessary here!). Or just use it to settle arguments about chores. Loser cooks dinner and washes up!
Multiplayer is available on Nintendo Wii and Nintendo Switch.
So there you have it. My list of 5 fun video games for couples to play together – although I’m sure there are plenty more. Don’t have a gamer boyfriend/girlfriend yet? You’re missing out! Head online and visit a gamer dating app or even try meeting someone in game..!
