Happy New Year! This 2018, I’ve decided to do the usually avoidable for me by making (and sharing!) some New Year’s Resolutions. I often have a few ‘new year’ plans when the 1st Jan hits, but it’s very rare these days that I actually make a physical list or actually blog about it. Maybe having an actual list will help…?

Yeah, this one is easy. My eyebrows need styling/tinting and I really, really need to learn how to do them properly like a proper woman.

It’s safe to say I go batsh*t crazy when I’m PMSing. I’m lazy, I lash out and I want to eat allll the junk food. Normally these aren’t huge issues, but when I’m snapping at people around me and taking it out on others, it’s probably time to find a solution.

Whose New Year Resolution isn’t to travel more?! Some places I have in mind for 2018 are Dublin, Edinburgh and Iceland. And maybe somewhere sunny too..

I want to stop pressing snooze on my alarm five times before I finally get up, roll out of bed, get ready in a rush and head to work. I want to wake up peacefully, have a cuppa in bed and actually have breakfast for once. So far I have failed at this resolution every morning this week but, y’know, there’s still 360 days left to get this resolution down.

I’m getting there. So far, in Romanian I can say:
– Milk
– Tea
– I love you
– You are a child

and that’s about it. But these things take time!

2017 will always be known as the year I finally delved into the world of podcast’s and binge-listened to My Dad Wrote A Porno for five hours straight as my boyfriend and I road tripped across Romania. Good times. But this year I will expand my podcast knowledge/listening and try a few new ones. Podcasts I currently have my eye on are: Ctrl Alt Delete, The Last Podcast On The Left and, of course, Serial. Any other recommendations would be welcome though.

I’ve been ombré blonde for sooo long now and although it’s a smart and failsafe look, it just makes me feel like I’m blending into the background. I’d love to go for a drastic look or colour but I’m thinking shorter, a bright colour and then, when that fades/grows out, back to a trusty chocolate brunette shade. I’m not sure when exactly, but it’s definitely time for a change.

I’ll obviously be doing a proper post on my 2018 blogging goals, but I’d like to raise my DA score, successfully migrate to WordPress, build a better relationship with brands and be all round more successful in general.

I really began to get a grip on my savings towards the end of last year and this year I want to continue that and save more. I’d like to save enough to get out of my overdraft and to be able to afford my own place. This seems absolutely impossible right now, but every little step helps!

What are your New Year’s Resolutions? Let me know!

I’ve never been big on new year’s resolutions, instead usually choosing to set myself general goals like being more happy and healthy.

But for 2017 I’ve decided to set a few more specific ones, although I’m choosing to make them more realistic.
Here are some of my 2017 new years resolutions!

This is one that’s been on my mind for a while now and I hope I’ll stick with it. I once tried to learn the guitar to no avail (well, I can play two songs acoustically), but I’ve always been drawn to the drums, too. I think I’m pretty good at following a beat (and by that I mean I tap along with my hands when listening to a song – I’m a born drummer, aren’t I?!) and, years and years ago when my sister ventured into learning and brought her own drum kit, I had a go on it and thought I was quite good. So I’d like to explore this option!

This one is self explanatory really. My sister and I used to attend ice hockey games a lot back in the day and over the past few years, I’ve been itching to get back into it. It’s a fun and alternative night out with good music and an amazing atmosphere. They do games in Milton Keynes which is just down the road from me, so there’s no excuse not to really.

Over the past few years I’ve shamelessly stuck to what I know, bar a few songs I really like. In 2017, I’d love to get into more bands and rather than saving just one song I hear and really like, I’d like to listen to the said artist’s other music too.

I’m not being specific about this, but I’d just like to save money.

I found details about this awesome fitness class which is inspired by drumming. It looks amazing and like a really good work out, and I’ll be starting this class in the new year – I’m already booked in for a class on the 3rd.

Another self explanatory one – I just like swimming but make so many excuses not to go. The local swimming pool is pretty much just around the corner from me, so I’ll be aiming to go swimming at least once a fortnight (and maybe then once a week).

I always Shazam songs then never actually listen to them again. I’ve made a slow start on this already, having created ‘The Shazam Playlist’ on Spotify, and I’ll also use this to discover new music too.

There’s tons of series I want to watch next year but I really think it’s about time I get into Black Mirror. It’s right up my street and everybody always talks about it as it raises so many interesting issues, so this will be my first and foremost binge-watching session in 2017.

I’ve had some really good feedback on the interviews I’ve already done, so I’d like to take this a step further and conduct some of these interviews on camera, or, perhaps, on radio.

Which brings me to my next point – in the new year I’m going to consider volunteering for my own radio show for the local university. It’ll be super fun and I appeared on my friend’s show recently, which I really enjoyed. I don’t think I’m quite ready to jump straight into getting my own show just yet, but I’ll be taking part in my friend’s show a lot more in the new year hopefully to get a feel of things and then go from there.

I think these are pretty realistic and achievable! Do you have any new year’s resolutions? Let me know!

Boy am I glad to see the back of 2015 and I can’t help but think with the way the world has been going lately, many people must agree. Hopefully this little post will be the last I’ll see of 2015!
Therefore, here’s my usual sum-up of the past year…

Formidable Joy - UK Fashion, Beauty & Lifestyle Blog | My Year In Review | My 2015; Formidable Joy; Formidable Joy.com; My year review

1. What did you do in 2015 that you’d never done before?
I put down a deposit to go travelling…alone! Although I haven’t gone yet (it’s hard trying to book the time off work), the deposit is down and I’m going travelling. Mexico, here I come…
2. Did you keep your New Year’s Resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I didn’t make any last year, but I made a conscious to be more happy and go on more adventures.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No, they did not, but someone close to me will do later this year!
4. Did anyone close to you die?
Yes, we lost my mum to cancer early last year and even though it still hasn’t hit me yet, it’s obviously been a tough time.
5. What places did you visit?
Amsterdam, Tunisia, Warwick Castle. Ha.
6. What would you like to have in 2016 that you lacked in 2015?
Still, a rock star boyfriend please, please, please.  And a drivers license.
BUT. I did get two things I asked for last year and that’s my own car and a job related to my degree. Whoop!
7. What dates from 2015 will remain etched in your memory, and why?
I made some great memories in Amsterdam and Tunisia, hilarious memories that I’ll remember for the rest of my life. And I think I’ll remember the little things too, like the effort my closest friends made on my birthday and how just sitting around playing stupid games with food and drink was a hell of a lot of fun.
Obviously, on a darker note, the day my mum passed away will forever remain etched in my memory, as will her funeral…but in a bittersweet way, her funeral was really bloody lovely. It was sad, but the day was spent with laughter as we shared memories of her and that’s exactly what she would have wanted.
8. What was your biggest achievement this year?
Buying my first car and getting my dream job!
9. What was your biggest failure?
No failure, except, perhaps, I’d love to have achieved these things when my mum was still alive as I know she wanted those things for me and that they’d make her proud.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Nope. Although I think I pulled a muscle in my boob towards the end of the year (don’t ask me how, I think maybe I got a bit over vigorous when playing Just Dance) as my left boob was really painful for about a month.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
My car! By far.
12. Who’s behaviour merited celebration?
My parents. My beautiful mum was so, so brave and positive even to the end and I can’t even begin to imagine how hard things have been on my dad, but he’s been pretty strong about it all.
13. Who’s behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
No one, really, at least no one that would be worth mentioning on the blog.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Clothes, gig tickets and my car.
15. What did you get really excited about?
Gig tickets and my car.
16. What song will always remind you of 2015?
I honestly couldn’t tell you.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you :
a. happier or sadder? A little sadder if I’m honest, it’s been a tough year.
b. thinner or fatter? Fatter! I think I’ve put on a bit of weight over Christmas!
c. richer or poorer? about the same…I’m earning more with my new job but don’t you find that the more you earn the more you actually find reason to spend?!
18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Told my mum I loved her.
19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Nothing! I got to do some great stuff last year,
20. How did you spend Christmas?
We didn’t really celebrate Christmas as it was too hard without Mamaw, so we just had close family round and had a curry! Simple but still in typical ‘us’ fashion.
21. Did you fall in love in 2015?
22. What was your favourite TV program?
The Walking Dead or Daredevil.
23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate at this time last year?
24. What was the best book you read?
How to kill a rock star.
25. What music did you get excited about?
Panic! At The Disco, 21 Pilots and The Maine.
26. What did you want and get?
I didn’t want anything, but I still got some lovely gifts for my birthday.
27. What did you want and not get?
28. What was your favourite film of this year?
Mad Max!
29. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 26 and blogged about my birthday weekend here! I spent the Saturday in London with my sister making Christmas wreaths, and Sunday was spent getting lost/locked in Warwick castle with friends. On my actual birthday, we just put on a spread and some drink and had close friends and family pop round throughout the day.
30. What one thing would have made your year more satisfying?
Passing my driving test and pursuing my music project,
31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2015?
Lazy. Terribly lazy.
32. What kept you sane?
Music, friends and family.
33. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
No one really! Although I definitely developed a cheeky crush on Jay after watching him in Strictly Come Dancing.
34. What political issue stirred you the most?
Everything that happened not only in Paris, but all the innocent lives being taken around the world. Life really isn’t fair sometimes and although I understand that what is wrong in our eyes might be right in other religions, I don’t condemn that type of murder and wish the world wasn’t the way it was right now.
35. Whom did you miss?
My beautiful mum, through and through.
36. Who was the best new person you met?
No one I can think of..
37. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2015.
Life can be ever so unfair and you’ll never quite understand why things happen the way they do, but you can’t change it. You should just make sure to remember that life is too short and you should always tell someone you love them and make them feel appreciated.
38. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
‘This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine’
